Creating websites and more!

The ending of the book "lol...omg!" by Matt Ivester sum up the most important thing about being on social media which is that you are in control of what happens and what is happening. While growing up, we were always told to be careful and thoughtful of what goes online, not only about our own self but about others as well.

Chapter 10 gives 10 tests that help judge your actions and help you think ahead.

  1. The Golden Rule- like everyone was taught in grade school, treat others the way you would like to be treated
  2. The Golden Rule 2.0- a twist on the golden rule but still contributing to the same overall thought, are you treating other people the way that THEY want to be treated.
  3. The Laws and Policies Test- are you breaking any laws?
  4. The Everybody Test- are you the only one doing something, are other people pulling the same actions as you?
  5. The Offline Test- would you do what you are doing face-to-face with someone. Would you make the same actions offline.
  6. The Real Name Test- if you are posting something anonymously, would having your name involved make your choices different?
  7. The Emotion Test- are your emotions the reason why you are posting, engaging with activity.
  8. The Whole World Test- would It be okay if everyone in the world knew exactly what you were doing.
  9. The "Get It" Test- is there a chance that what you are doing/saying be misinterpreted.
  10. Your Test- overall, is what you are doing, saying making you look good or bad. How you are portraying yourself matters to you as well. Do you feel proud of how the world is seeing you.
You want to think about what is going to happen if you do something. Thinking farther into the future rather than just the now.

The book also ends on the though of being real online. Showing your real self is important to again, not only yourself, but others around you. In cases such as the AirBnB stories that were talked about where genuine people put out their house for others to use and It was demolished, broken, and stolen. If their true self was shown online, they would not have been given the opportunity to share the house in which they were.

In class, we went over ways on how to create a website. How to create a website in honor or yourself, all of your accomplishments and everything that you want to show future employers. In a way, you can show them this instead of just handing in a resume in which this has what a resume includes and more.

The article "Where to begin with building a website", having a host is the first step. Figuring out which website you would like to use to create your own. Whatever you feel is easiest and most valuable is most likely the one you should go with. After deciding the host, you need your domain name, pages, and content. Making sure that you have everything you need on the website, making sure that everything is accessible to use for outside users as well.
